In the midst of the current times while we foresee challenges that lay ahead of us and the repercussions the pandemic will have, we certainly cannot disregard the already existing health challenges that can potentially elevate the threat. Smoking is one such issue. It is found that there is a  statistically significant association between the smoking status and primary end point of admission to intensive care units in COVID-19 patients. ‘Vaping’ or the use of electronic smoking devices gained popularity in recent times, while there is limited data available on long term usage of the same but there is scientific evidence in regards to the detrimental effects of vaping and its role in worsening debilitating lung diseases. Smoking cessation may help to improve the dire outcomes. The current times have brought to light the health disparities associated with active smoking. Harnessing the potential of our healthcare and allied healthcare workers via extensive cessation training programs and community led smoking cessation interventions can help address this public health challenge.
